 Jane Austen’s

Northanger Abbey.

Calling all Regency romantics, gothic dreamers, and charming scoundrels! To celebrate her 250th birthday Your Chance Productions are bringing Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey.

Matthew Francis’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s first novel wryly dramatizes Catherine Morland’s romantic fantasy world alongside her real one, capturing Austen’s irony in witty dialogue and narration.

Brought up in a small-town Catherine Morland never really experienced life beyond her family parsonage, that is until one day wealthy family friends invite her to join them in Bath for the summer season. Excited and a little overwhelmed, she tries to make sense of her new environment by comparing it to the gothic romances which she has been reading lately but Catherine quickly discovers that real life isn’t at all like it is in fiction.

In Bath she meets new acquaintances, makes a number of miscalculations about people and relationships and tries to learn who can be trusted, who has a secret agenda and whether she can really trust her own heart or her own judgement in this world of fake friends, cads and braggarts.

What delights then await her beyond Bath when she’s invited to join a new ‘friend’ at the remote and mysterious Northanger Abbey?

About Us: Early Life

Your Chance Productions began as a small university project in 2010.

As part of her final year, founder Jessica McLean had to set up a theatre group and perform a piece of work written and directed by herself.

After graduating she decided to continue with the company and Your Chance Productions became an amateur dramatics group.

In 2012, Jessie was becoming increasingly aware of some definite favouritism and cliques forming within other local amateur dramatics groups and many, very talented people were just not being given a chance to shine.

Taking inspiration from the company name “Your Chance Productions” Jessie began focusing specifically on giving people that chance. Many actors developed their confidence and ability during this time and were then able to move on to bigger groups and get themselves noticed.

About Us: Now

In 2019 after seeing a lot of talented people come and go, Founder Jessica McLean made the decision to move on from amateur dramatics and look into turning Your Chance Productions into a professional theatre company. Bad timing perhaps because of course in 2020 we were hit with a global pandemic and for over a year nothing was being performed.

Their first professional production was meant to be an all-female Sherlock Holmes, due to be performed in June 2020, it eventually went on in October 2021, after being postponed twice due to the pandemic.

The production was a huge success and has allowed the company to continue creating work that challenges perceptions, plays with gender and continues to give people of all backgrounds and abilities a chance to develop their craft.

Working with actors across the Midlands (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire) YCP have performed several productions from classic Shakespeare to modern comedies and thrilling murder mysteries.

We continue to develop and grow as a company and hope to one day find a permanent home of our own.
